DATUS stands out from the crowd because it is peer-led. Being peer-led is a significant factor in our success at engaging with stigmatised groups.
It means that DATUS can delive a professional service while striving to ensure peers are not only represented but active at board-level and within the staff team.
At DATUS we believe that any individual, or communities, journey of recovery and movement through change should work hand in hand with the empowerment of the individual and communities themselves.
How can an individual achieve real lasting change if they feel dislocated and detached from the mechanism that offer this change? Quite simply they can’t.
DATUS believes that when individuals and communities feel in control of, and like stakeholders in, their own process of change they can start to realise a capital bank of resources that will suit they own needs and facilitate a stronger ownership and subsequent longevity of recovery.

See Change is a community engagement program. We develop connections with local community organisations, providing opportunities to help build and access community resources, reducing stigma and paving the way for peers in the future by developing positive connections.
Peer-led advocacy has been an integral part of the services DATUS provides since the organisation began and we have developed a wealth of skills and experience to support individuals within a broad range of contexts. DATUS is always concerned that individuals with complex needs do not get left behind and we provide support to maximise their chances of achieving recovery.
Since 2010 DATUS have delivered prison in-reach work in HMP Birmingham, combining mutual aid with evidence-based psycho-social interventions. We also deliver through-the-gate interventions supporting prisoners upon release and provide meaningful opportunities for individuals to engage with.
Peers through Care connects the community with treatment. This new approach will eliminate the cliff-edge feeling reported by individuals that can accompany leaving treatment.
DATUS allotment project based in Northfield is a chance to meet others in recovery and benefit from a therapeutic activity. Attendees can learn to grow fruit and vegetables, take home fresh produce and learn cooking skills by harvesting and preparing food on-site.
DATUS provide resources and infrastructure for a local network of mutual aid groups. All attendees at all groups have access to training and support to become facilitators if they wish. This is one of the key principles of the network giving attendees a sense of ownership, the chance to gain new skills and opportunities to develop and contribute to the network.
